Iran never plotted to assassinate Trump

Pezeshkian made the remarks in an exclusive interview with NBC News’ Lester Holt in Tehran.

Asked about the alleged plot against Trump claimed by US authorities, Pezeshkian said, “This is another one of those schemes that Israel and other countries are designing to promote Iranophobia. … Iran has never attempted to nor does it plan to assassinate anyone.”

Asked whether Iran is willing to promise that there will be no attempt on Trump’s life, Pezeshkian said, “We have never attempted this to begin with, and we never will.”

The interview is Pezeshkian’s first with foreign media since the US presidential election. It was conducted with a government interpreter present and translated in real time.

Senior Iranian diplomats discuss JCPOA with EU”s Mora

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi took to X social media platform to say that he and Iran”s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi held open and constructive discussions with Mora and his team in Geneva.

“We exchanged views mainly on nuclear/sanctions lifting as well as other issues of mutual interest,” he wrote.

“We also addressed Europe’s support for Israeli crimes in Gaza,” Gharibabadi concluded.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany. Former US President Donald Trump illegally pulled out of the deal in 2018 while the current US President, Joe Biden, has signaled that he is ready to resurrect the agreement.

Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the US, and France have been in talks with Iran since April 2021 to reinstate the deal.

The talks to salvage the JCPOA kicked off in the Austrian capital of Vienna in April 2021, with the intention of examining Washington’s seriousness in rejoining the deal and removing anti-Iran sanctions.

The negotiations have been at a standstill since August due to Washington’s insistence on its hard-nosed position of not removing all the sanctions that were slapped on the Islamic Republic by the previous US administration. Iran maintains it is necessary for the other side to offer some guarantees that it will remain committed to any agreement that is reached.
