“International Relations Roundup – Key Diplomatic Moves & Security Concerns”

No negotiations held between Iran, US so far

Araghchi made the remarks on Sunday on the sidelines of a meeting held by the National Security and Foreign Policy Committee of the Iranian Parliament.

“We have declared our stance, we advocate for diplomacy and negotiations, but indirectly. Of course, it should be admitted that no rounds of negotiations have been held so far,” Araghchi said on the sidelines of the meeting, which he attended to brief the parliamentary committee on the latest status quo of the issue of talks with Washington.

Back in 2018, US President Donald Trump, during his first term in office, launched his so-called “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran after he withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, best known as JCPOA, that had been clinched three years earlier. Following his return to the White House on January 20 this year, Trump restored that campaign while expressing willingness for direct talks with Iran to make a new deal on its nuclear program. He has also threatened Iran with military action if no new deal is reached.

Amid Trump’s threats, which Iran has strongly dismissed and responded to by saying that no direct talks would take place under pressure, US Senator Tom Cotton said several days ago that Trump prefers a deal with Iran like the one Libya cut with the United States in 2003.

“He would dream on,” Araghchi said as he reacted to the senator’s remark.

The top diplomat also commented on a meeting French President Emmanuel Macron held with key ministers and experts on Wednesday to discuss Iran, including its nuclear program. Following the meeting chaired by Macron, France’s foreign minister warned of a potential military confrontation if a new deal cannot be reached on Iran’s nuclear program.

They have presented their own assessment, but if France takes any measure in line with potential military action against Iran, “we will consider them complicit in any action against our country,” Araghchi said.

IAEA chief Grossi to visit Iran for talks

Referring to the recent phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi, the senior Iranian diplomat told Mehr News Agency that Iran has given its preliminary approval for Grossi’s visit to Tehran.

“In this call, due to ongoing developments, we expressed our concerns and expectations, reminding the IAEA of its responsibilities toward member states,” Baghai said. He added that while Grossi”s visit to Iran has been agreed to, further negotiations on the details and schedule are ongoing.

Baghaei emphasized that this engagement is part of Iran’s regular cooperation with the IAEA, particularly regarding a few outstanding safeguards-related issues. He also stressed that Iran expects the IAEA to fulfill its legal obligations, especially in the face of continued threats against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities by the US and the Israeli regime.

“The IAEA is obligated under Resolution 533 and other international legal frameworks to take a clear stance and condemn such threats,” Baghaei noted, adding that these topics will be addressed during Grossi’s visit to Tehran.

Iran, Russia, China to hold meeting on nuclear issues

“We will soon have a meeting at the level of deputy ministers with the new EU foreign policy officials,” Baghaei said on Monday morning at his weekly press conference.

“Today and tomorrow, we have another tripartite meeting in Moscow, where China, Russia, and Iran will discuss various aspects related to the nuclear issue, the JCPOA, and Resolution 2231,” he added.

The JCPOA was signed in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany. Former US President Donald Trump illegally pulled out of the deal in 2018.

Russia, the UK, Germany, China, the US, and France have been in talks with Iran since April 2021 to reinstate the deal.

The talks to salvage the JCPOA kicked off in the Austrian capital of Vienna in April 2021, with the intention of examining Washington’s seriousness in rejoining the deal and removing anti-Iran sanctions.

The negotiations have been at a standstill due to Washington’s insistence on its hard-nosed position of not removing all the sanctions that were slapped on the Islamic Republic. Iran maintains that it is necessary for the other side to offer some guarantees that it will remain committed to any agreement that is reached.

Israel kills two in attack on journalist tent in Gaza

At least two people have been killed and several others sustained severe injuries and burns after an Israeli attack targeted a tent sheltering journalists near Nasser Hospital in the city of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, as the genocidal war on the besieged coastal territory continues unabated.

Local health officials said the strike killed Helmi al-Faqawi, a journalist, while the Palestinian Information Center and the Quds News Network identified the other victim as Yusuf al-Khazandar, a young man who was in the area as the strike took place on Monday morning.

At least seven other people were also wounded in the assault. They are identified as Ahmad Mansour, Hassan Eslaih, Ahmad al-Agha, Mohammad Fayek, Abdallah al-Attar, Ihab al-Bardini and Mahmoud Awad.

Palestinian media outlets reported that Mansour sustained severe injuries and burns from the Israeli attack on the journalists’ tent.

The Quds News Network said the Palestinian, who is also a father, is fighting for his life with “catastrophic burns” and that doctors are “desperately trying to save him.”

The outlet reported that another of the journalists who was wounded is also in critical condition.

It said Ihab al-Bardini was struck in the head by shrapnel, which exited through his eye.

In a statement, the Palestinian Journalists Forum denounced the bombing as a “heinous crime and a deliberate targeting of journalists that violated all international laws and conventions.”

The deadly Israeli attack came a day after female Palestinian journalist Islam Nasiruddin Meqdad, along with her child, Adam, was killed as an attack struck a home in al-Amal neighborhood in western Khan Yunis.

Earlier this month, Hamas strongly condemned the ongoing deliberate targeting of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces, describing it as a flagrant violation of international and humanitarian law.

The resistance movement lambasted Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration for intentionally escalating such crimes in the face of international inaction and silence.

The group also stated that the killing of journalists forms part of the broader campaign of genocide waged by Israeli forces against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

The movement noted that the killing of more than 200 Palestinian journalists in Gaza — many alongside their families and children — by Israeli airstrikes, shelling, and gunfire reflects the occupying regime’s deliberate and vengeful effort to silence the media and deter journalists from exposing the truth of what is happening in the region.

“These unprecedented crimes against journalists in the history of modern conflicts require urgent action,” Hamas said, calling on the international community, the United Nations, and its judicial bodies to intervene and hold the Israeli leadership accountable.

It also urged global media organizations and press freedom institutions to denounce these crimes and to intensify efforts to boycott and isolate Israel in response to its systematic targeting of journalists and media workers.
