Americans know extent of Iran’s defensive power

“At the very least, the Americans know well how far the Islamic Republic of Iran’s defensive power can extend,” Abbas Araghchi said during a meeting with Algerian elites and media executives in the African country’s capital, Algiers, on Tuesday.

The top diplomat made it clear that Iran’s commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness, asserting, “The Islamic Republic of Iran does not seek war, but if necessary, it knows well how to defend itself.”

He separately underscored, “We doubt the intentions of the US and are not certain they possess the will for a fair and serious negotiation, but we will test them.”

The latter comments concerned the prospect of indirect negotiations that are set to begin between Araghchi and the United States regional envoy Steve Witkoff in the Omani capital Muscat on Saturday, with Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi as mediator.

“If their demand is for Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons, that demand can be examined,” Araghchi said. “But if they have other objectives in mind, they may not achieve them,” he added.

In the same context, the official dismissed the West’s claims that the Islamic Republic was pursuing nuclear weapons, PressTV reported.

“The claim that Iran seeks nuclear weapons is a baseless accusation,” he said. “We are confident in the peaceful nature of our nuclear program and are prepared to address any concern or worry through diplomacy.”

The foreign minister reiterated his and other Iranian officials’ earlier remarks that direct negotiations with the United States were off the table as long as Washington retained its hostile posture.

“Negotiations must take place from a position of equality, fairness, and dignity, not under ‘maximum pressure’ and military threats,” he said.

“As long as ‘maximum pressure’ and threats continue, fair conditions for negotiation do not exist, and we will not engage in direct talks,” Araghchi stated, referring to the US’s way of sustaining and even ramping up its already illegal and unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic, while repeatedly threatening Tehran with military aggression.

Nonetheless, Iran has left the door open for diplomacy, Araghchi noted.

“The path of diplomacy is not closed, and we have announced that we are open to indirect negotiations with the US,” he said.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the official warned that the Israeli regime was actively attempting to ignite broader regional conflict, pointing to Tel Aviv’s expansionist regional aggression, namely its war of genocide on the Gaza Strip as well as its escalated deadly aggression towards the occupied West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria.

US says no negotiations with Iran on Saturday

“This is a meeting that”s happening right on Saturday. There”s a meeting, there”s no negotiations,” she said. “Again, it”s not a negotiation, it”s a meeting, and that”s what the commitment is.”

She confirmed that US special envoy Steven Witkoff will travel to Oman but refused to say whether he will meet with the Iranian delegation. “I can”t speak to that, but he will be there,” she only said.

She recalled that both US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio insist that Iran must not possess any nuclear weapons.

Iran has repeatedly said that it is not seeking nuclear weapons, stressing that its nuclear technology is solely for civil purposes. Also, there is a Fatwa by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution which bans any possession and use of weapons of mass destruction.

US says Saturday talks with Iran will be ‘direct’

“First of all, when it comes to Saturday, I won’t get ahead of the president. He has said there will be direct talks with Iran on Saturday,” spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters.

Leavitt said she would not share any additional details “for obvious reasons, security reasons.”

Her remarks came one day after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said both sides will meet for “indirect” high-level talks.

“It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America’s court,” Araghchi wrote on X.

Leavitt stated Trump has re-imposed “crippling sanctions” on Iran.

“He’s made it very clear to Iran, they have a choice to make. … If they don’t choose to move forward with diplomacy in a deal which is the direction we do see them headed in, there will be grave consequences,” she added.

Trump said Monday that negotiations are “in Iran’s best interests.”

The US president has threatened military action if the talks fail, warning that Tehran “is going to be in great danger” without an agreement.

Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, will lead the US delegation for talks with Iran, Axios reported Tuesday, citing two sources familiar with the plan.

US will take back Panama canal from China influence: Pentagon

The United States will not allow China to jeopardise the operations of the Panama Canal, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned during a visit to the Central American nation on Tuesday.

Hegseth is the second senior US official to visit Panama since President Donald Trump took office in January, vowing to “take back” the US-built canal to counter what he sees as China”s disproportionate influence over the waterway.

“Today, the Panama Canal faces ongoing threats,” Hegseth said in a speech at a police station located at the entry to the shipping route.

Speaking alongside Panama”s President Jose Raul Mulino, Hegseth said the US and Panama together would “take back the Panama Canal from China”s influence” and keep it open to all nations, using the “deterrent power of the strongest, most effective and most lethal fighting force in the world.”

He claimed that China”s control of critical infrastructure in the canal area gave Beijing the power to conduct spying activities across Panama, making Panama and the United States “less secure, less prosperous and less sovereign.”

The Chinese Embassy in Panama issued a statement refuting Hegseth”s claim that Beijing interferes in the operations of the canal.

“China has never taken part in the management or operation of the Panama Canal, nor has it interfered in issues” concerning the waterway, the statement said, calling on Washington to halt “blackmail” and “plundering” of Panama and other countries of the region.

It labelled Hegseth”s comments “not at all responsible or founded” and said the United States “has orchestrated a sensationalist campaign based on the “China threat theory” so as to undermine cooperation between China and Panama.

“China has always respected Panama”s sovereignty with regard to the canal,” the embassy said.

The Panama Ports concession to operate Balboa port on the Pacific side of the canal and Cristobal port on the Atlantic side was first granted in 1997 and renewed for another 25 years in 2021.

Russia welcomes US-Iran negotiations on nuclear program

Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Peskov said Moscow views the developments positively.

“We are aware that certain contacts, both direct and indirect, are planned in Oman. Naturally, this is something we can only welcome, as it may help de-escalate tensions surrounding Iran,” he added.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced upcoming direct talks with Iran, saying a meeting “almost at the highest level” was scheduled for Saturday. He expressed cautious optimism about reaching an agreement, adding that “no one wants the opposite.”

But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Tehran and Washington will hold “indirect high-level talks” in Oman on Saturday.

“Iran and the United States will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect high-level talks,” Araghchi posted on X on Tuesday morning.

“It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America’s court,” he stated.

China calls on US to show ‘sincerity’ on Iranian nuclear issue

“As the country that unilaterally withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and contributed to the current situation, the US should show political sincerity, uphold the spirit of mutual respect, engage in dialogue and consultation and stop the wrongdoing of threatening and exerting maximum pressure,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

The statement from Beijing came after US President Donald Trump said Monday that Washington would engage in direct “very high-level” talks with Iran about Tehran’s nuclear program, adding that the talks are “in Iran’s best interests.”

But Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted that the talks would be though a mediator.

“Iran and the United States will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect high-level talks,” he wrote on X.

“It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America’s court.”

Russia, China and Iran held a two-day talk in Moscow on Iran’s nuclear program. Beijing hosted similar talks at the level of vice foreign ministerial level last month.

Beijing also encouraged a solution through political and diplomatic ways, “under the current situation, parties of the Iranian nuclear issue should make joint efforts, enhance dialogue and communication and avoid escalation,” said Lin.

“China will continue to maintain communication with relevant parties, promote peace talks and work for a diplomatic settlement that accommodates parties’ legitimate concerns so as to uphold the international non-proliferation regime and to keep the Middle East peaceful and stable,” he added.

Trump has threatened military action against Iran if a deal cannot be reached and repeated Monday that Tehran “is going to be in great danger” if the talks fail.
