Ballistic Missiles, Shaheds Rain Down on Northern Ukraine’s Konotop, Infrastructure Destroyed
Russian forces attacked the northern Ukrainian city of Konotop, in the Sumy region, bordering Russia, with Shahed drones and ballistic missiles overnight, destroying a major infrastructure facility.
Konotop Mayor Artem Semenikhin reported the first explosion on Telegram at 00:36 on Monday, May 5. A series of blasts followed as the city came under attack.
Semenikhin shared audio recordings on Telegram capturing sounds of gunfire and explosions, likely caused by air defenses targeting incoming kamikaze drones.
He later confirmed there were no initial casualties or injuries.
“The attack involved more than a dozen kamikaze drones and two ballistic missiles,” he wrote. “The katsaps [a slang term used in Ukraine to refer to Russians, particularly in a negative or mocking context, – ed.] deliberately struck at intervals to cause greater destruction and to kill rescuers and medics. Cynical monsters.”
The strike destroyed an unspecified infrastructure site in Konotop.
During Palm Sunday religious services on April 13, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the northern Ukrainian city of Sumy. By Sunday night, emergency services confirmed that 34 people, including two children, had been killed and 117 others injured, among them 15 children.
US President Donald Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, condemned the strike on social media, saying the attack on civilian targets “crosses any line of decency.”
Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, also reacted, honoring the victims of the “horrifying Russian missile attack on Sumy.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky said that of the 68 injured taken to hospitals, eight were in serious condition.
“In addition to the university, the strike damaged five apartment buildings, cafes, shops, and the district court. In total, the Russian attack damaged 20 buildings,” Zelensky said.
“Only completely deranged scum can do something like this,” he added in his evening address.
