ICESCO Concludes Workshop on Protection of Cultural Property
Rabat, July 05 (QNA) – The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), in cooperation with Qatar National Library (QNL) and General Authority of Customs, concluded the five-day regional workshop on the role of customs authorities in combating illicit trafficking in cultural property in Rabat, Morocco, today.
The workshop culminated in a working session dedicated to presenting the white paper”s methodology, which aims to enhance coordination between customs agencies, build effective partnerships to combat cultural property smuggling networks, develop shared databases, and improve mechanisms for documenting and storing confiscated cultural property, thus contributing to increased customs efficiency and regional and international cooperation.
In the closing session, Head of the Department of Legal Affairs and International Standards at ICESCO Mohamed Hedi Shili presented the workshop”s final recommendations and outcomes that called for enhanced cooperation and integration between customs agencies, law enforcement agencies, museums, and cultural organizations in Islamic countries to protect cultural heritage from illicit trafficking. Certificates of appreciation were also distributed to the participants in recognition of their contributions to the success of this important regional event.
The event was held as part of QNL”s ongoing efforts to combat the illicit trafficking of cultural property in the region, as the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA)”s Regional Preservation and Conservation Centre for the Arab region.
