Israeli war chief orders plan for ‘complete defeat’ of Hamas in Gaza before Trump’s inauguration
Israel’s defense minister has ordered the military to prepare and submit a plan for a “decisive victory” in Gaza and the “complete defeat” of Hamas, Hebrew media outlets reported on 10 January.
Israel Katz said the army must draw up a strategy for the “complete defeat of Hamas in Gaza” and stressed that the plan would commence if the captives being held by the resistance were not released by the time US President-elect Donald Trump takes office, according to Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom.
The incoming US president recently threatened that “all hell would break loose” if the Israeli captives were not released by the time he assumes the presidency.
Katz rejected the idea of a political solution and said no Arab or international force would take charge of leading the administration of post-war Gaza without a complete collapse of Hamas.

Election of new Lebanese president ‘puts pressure’ on Israel to withdraw troops: Report
Hebrew media reported on 10 January that the election of Joseph Aoun as president of Lebanon will increase pressure on Israel to withdraw its troops in the south of the country.
Israeli newspaper Walla wrote that Aoun’s election on 9 January, which broke over two years of political deadlock in Lebanon, “is expected to increase pressure on Israel to complete the withdrawal of IDF forces from southern Lebanon by the end of January,” citing senior US and Israeli officials.
The report notes that the new president, formerly the commander of Lebanon’s Armed Forces (LAF), enjoys broad international and Arab support – particularly from the US and Saudi Arabia.
“The Israelis will soon begin to receive the message from all over the world that they need to come to terms with reality and that there is no way they can stay in Lebanon,” a US official told the outlet.
If the army does not withdraw, it will “find itself in conflict with the international community.”
NOTE: The Israeli army has reportedly committed at least 432 violations of a cease-fire agreement with Lebanon since the agreement took effect on Nov. 27.
The violations included incursions, artillery and tank shelling, demolitions of homes and buildings, drone and warplane overflights, and sweeping operations with machine guns.
On Friday, 6 Lebanese were killed in an Israeli drone attack, for a total of at least 39 deaths since the ceasefire took effect. Lebanon has essentially maintained its end of the deal.
Israel plans long-term occupation of ‘control zone’ deep inside Syria: Report
Israel plans to establish a “control zone” 15 kilometers deep inside Syria and an intelligence “sphere of influence” extending 60 kilometers, claiming the new government in Damascus includes “the most dangerous people in the world,” Ynet reported on 10 December.
“The Israeli army will maintain a presence to ensure that the new regime’s allies in Syria cannot fire rockets toward the Golan Heights,” the officials told the Hebrew newspaper.
They stressed “the need for a 60-kilometer sphere of influence inside Syria under the control of Israeli intelligence to monitor and prevent potential threats from developing.”
Israel claims that the new Syrian government, led by the former Al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), poses a threat to Israel that is ignored by western countries.
“No one can guarantee that they will not eventually turn against us, and these are very dangerous people,” an unnamed senior Israeli official told Ynet.
However, the Israeli government provided financial, military, and medical support to HTS in the past when the group was known as the Nusra Front.

STATISTICS OCTOBER 7, 2023 – JANUARY 10, 2025:
Palestinian death toll from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: at least 47,382* – 46,537 in Gaza; in the West Bank, Israeli soldiers and/or settlers have killed at least 845 Palestinians (~175 of them children).
(The ministry of health added 499 deaths to its death toll on Saturday, specifying they have now completed the data and confirmed identities on files whose information was incomplete.)
Thousands of those killed in Gaza have yet to be identified, and an estimated 11,000 more are still buried under rubble.
According to a report in the Lancet, by multiplying the reported deaths by five, it is possible to reach a conservative estimate of total deaths (including indirect causes like starvation and lack of medicine). Using the latest figure from AFP (46,006), it is reasonable to estimate at least 232,685 total deaths in Gaza since October 7th, 2023.
According to a recent report by the UN Human Rights Office of identified fatalities in Gaza, about 44% were children. It is reasonable to estimate that 20,848 of known direct deaths and 102,381 of the total deaths are children.
Palestinian injuries from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: at least 116,571 (including at least 109,571 in Gaza and 7,000 in the West Bank, including 830 children). [It remains unknown how many Americans are among the casualties in Gaza.]
Reported Israeli death toll from October 7, 2023 – January 10, 2025: ~1,608 (or 1,581) (~1,139 on October 7, 2023, of which ~32 were Americans, and ~36 were children); 423*** (or 396) military forces since the ground invasion began in Gaza (updated: Jan. 7, 2025); 46 military and civilians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Israel) and~10,000 injured.
NOTE: It is unknown at this time how many of the deaths and injuries of Israelis on October 7 were caused by Israeli soldiers.
ADDITIONAL STATISTICS: Since October 7th, 2023:
At least 54 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons (at least 35 of them from Gaza).
At least 43 Palestinians have died due to malnutrition (at least 37 of them children)**.
About 1.9 million of Gaza’s 2.3 million population are currently displaced.
About 345,000 Gazans are currently experiencing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.
*The Ministry’s figures have been contested by the Israeli authorities, although they have been accepted as accurate by Israeli intelligence services, the UN, and WHO. These data are supported by independent analyses, comparing changes in the number of deaths of UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) staff with those reported by the Ministry, which found claims of data fabrication implausible.
Previously, IAK did not include 471 Gazans killed in the Al Ahli hospital blast since the source of the projectile was being disputed. However, given that much evidence points to Israel as the culprit, Israel had previously bombed the hospital and has attacked many others, Israel is prohibiting outside experts from investigating the scene, and since the UN and other agencies are including the deaths from the attack in their cumulative totals, if Americans knew is now also doing so.
**Euro-Med Monitor reports that Gaza’s elderly are dying at an alarmingly high rate. The majority die at home and are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries. Additionally, according to Euromed, thousands have died from starvation, malnourishment, and inadequate medical care; these are considered indirect victims as they were not registered in hospitals.
***The figure does not include the reportedly 59 Israeli soldiers – nearly 17% of the total Israeli military deaths – killed due to friendly fire in Gaza and other military-related accidents.
† For most of the conflict, women and children accounted for about 70% of deaths in Gaza, with children making up a little over 40% of those killed, according to official statistics.
