Victories in fight against ISIL indebted to Gen. Soleimani

“The triumph over terrorism is an achievement attained by martyred commanders, which we must safeguard. Our victories were due to the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran, especially martyr Soleimani,” Falih al-Fayyadh said on Thursday evening in Tehran.

He was speaking at a ceremony in commemoration of the Iranian anti-terror commander, PMU deputy Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and their companions who were assassinated in a US drone strike near Baghdad International Airport in January 2020.

Fayyadh stressed that the fallen anti-terror commanders were the architects of victory over Daesh.

“We are commemorating the martyrdom of those, who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Iraq’s sovereignty and unity, and notched up an outstanding victory.

“The support we received from the Islamic Republic of Iran was very influential from the very beginning,” the PMU chief pointed out.

Fayyadh explained that Hashd al-Sha’abi is the unifying force of the Iraqi nation, and is acting under the auspices of the religious authority.

The PMU, he said, is an official force under the orders of Iraqi prime minister and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Mohammed al-Sudani, and its activities are confined within the frontiers of Iraq.

Fayyadh emphasized that the relationship between the Popular Mobilization Units and the Baghdad government is at its “highest level.”

“Our mission is to convey a message of peace and love for those who extend a hand of friendship to us from a position of equality. But we will be a thorn in the side of our enemies,” he said.

Fayyadh also stated that the flag of resistance will remain high in Gaza and Lebanon, adding, “We lost the jewel of the resistance, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, but our hope is in his brethren and sons who will continue his path.”

Hashd al-Sh’abai (PMU) fighters played a major role in the liberation of Daesh-held areas in the country.

Back in November 2016, the Iraqi parliament approved a law giving full legal status to the PMU fighters. It recognized the PMU as part of the national armed forces, placed the forces under the command of the prime minister, and granted them the right to receive salaries and pensions like the regular army and police forces.

Iran slams suspected ISIL-linked deadly attack in US

Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei delivered the condemnation in a statement on Friday.

On New Year”s Day, a truck driver plowed his vehicle into a crowd in New Orleans in the state of Louisiana, causing the fatalities and injuring more than 30 others.

A probe is investigating a possible link between the incident, during which the driver, who used to be in the US Army, was reportedly flying a flag belonging to the ISIL Takfiri terrorist group.

Baghaei reaffirmed the Islamic Republic’s principled position of denouncing terrorism in all its forms and representations no matter the place of its perpetration and those behind it, PressTV reported.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman condoled with the survivors.

The suspect in the tragedy, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, who was once deployed to Afghanistan, allegedly displayed the flag from his vehicle before barreling into the crowd in the French Quarter.

The victims were celebrating the arrival of 2025, when the attack occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m.

Witnesses described scenes of bodies and blood, and victims crying on the ground after the truck had passed. “The best way I can describe it is truly a war zone,” one witness said.

Investigators found weapons and a potential explosive device in Jabbar’s truck. Additionally, two suspected explosive devices were located in the French Quarter and were safely neutralized by the FBI.

Among the injured were two police officers, who were shot during an exchange of gunfire with Jabbar, who was ultimately killed by police.

Iran summons Italian envoy over illegal detention

Amadei was summoned by Director General of Western Europe of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Majid Nili on the continued detention of Mohammad Abedini.

Abedini, a co-founder of an Iranian company, and Mehdi Sadeghi, an employee of an American semiconductor manufacturing company, were accused of violating US export laws.

The detention of Abedini is an illegal act that was carried out upon the US Administration”s request and in line with the political and hostile goals of the country to hold Iranian citizens hostage, Nili said.

He added that this move not only harms the long-standing relations between Iran and Italy, but also contradicts the principles and standards of international law, including the rules of human rights, and can be a form of arbitrary detention.

He urged Italy to reject US hostage-taking policy, which is contrary to international law, especially human rights, to pave the grounds for Abedini”s release as soon as possible, and to prevent the US from harming the bilateral relations between Tehran and Rome.

The United States judicial authorities claimed that the equipment sent by these individuals to Iran was used in a drone attack in Jordan on January 28, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers and injuries to 47 others.

Abedini, who resides in both Switzerland and Iran, was arrested in Milan, Italy, at the request of the US administration. Sadeghi is an Iranian national with American citizenship who lives in Massachusetts.

Russia urges Israel to end Gaza hostilities immediately

Russia’s Representative at the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya noted that Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian enclave and attacks had caused a humanitarian crisis, damage to medical infrastructure and mass displacements.

“We are extremely concerned about the ongoing attacks on civilian facilities. The number of refugees amounts to millions, while the healthcare system in the [Gaza] Strip has almost been destroyed,” the Russian diplomat said as he backed the proposal put forward by the World Health Organization (WHO) to evacuate patients to southern Gaza, TASS reported.

Israel waged a genocidal war on the besieged Gaza on October 7, 2023, after the Palestinian Hamas Resistance group carried out a historic operation against the occupying entity in retaliation for the regime’s intensified atrocities against the Palestinian people.

Israel has imposed a complete siege on the densely populated territory, cutting off fuel, electricity, food, and water to the more than two million Palestinians living there.

Al-Qassam Brigades announced early on Saturday that it had destroyed the tanks during operations in the eastern part of the city of Jabalia, using strong explosives.

The group said it had targeted another Israeli Merkava armored vehicle with an anti-tank missile in the west of the Jabalia Refugee Camp.

Palestinian Resistance groups have been fighting the Israeli regime to defend the Gaza Strip in the face of relentless attacks that have left the enclave in ruin and mostly killed women and children. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, 45,658 Palestinians have lost their lives in the 15-month-old war.

Biden notifies Congress of $8 billion arms sale to Israel

The State Department has notified Congress “informally” of an $8 billion proposed arms deal with Israel that will include munitions for fighter jets and attack helicopters as well as artillery shells, two sources with direct knowledge tell Axios.

This will likely be the last weapons sale to the Tel Aviv regime the Biden administration approves.

It comes amid claims from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his supporters in recent months that Biden had imposed a silent “arms embargo” on Israel.

Some Democrats pushed the administration to condition arms sales to Israel based on Israel”s handling of the war effort and the humanitarian situation in Gaza, but Biden declined to do so.

This is a long-term agreement, according to the sources. Some production and delivery of the munitions can be fulfilled through current US stocks, but the majority will take one or more years to deliver.

The sources said the arms sale — which needs approval from the House and Senate foreign relations committees — includes AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles for fighter jets to defend against airborne threats, including drones.

The sale also includes 155mm artillery shells and Hellfire AGM-114 missiles for attack helicopters.

The proposed deal also includes small diameter bombs, JDAM tail kits that turn “dumb bombs” to precision munitions, 500-lb warheads and bomb fuzes.

Damascus airport to start operating international flights

“We announce we will start receiving international flights to and from Damascus International Airport from Tuesday,” Mr Al Saliby told official news agency Sana.

“We reassure Arab and international airlines that we are in the process of fully rehabilitating Aleppo and Damascus airports with the help of our partners so that they will be able to receive flights from all over the world,” Mr Al Saliby said.

Flights were suspended at Damascus International Airport following the collapse of the government of Bashar Al Assad.

Qatar Airways announced on Thursday it will resume flights to the Syrian capital Damascus after nearly 13 years, starting with three weekly flights beginning on Tuesday.

The Qatari national carrier “is pleased to announce the resumption of three weekly flights to Damascus, Syria, from 7 January 2025,” it said in a statement.

It hailed a “significant step in reconnecting the region”, about a month after Islamist-led rebels toppled Syria”s longtime ruler Bashar Al Assad, capping more than a decade of civil war.

“Qatar Airways is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure that all necessary safety, security and operational standards are met ahead of the relaunch,” the airline said.

Qatar was the second country, after Turkey, to reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital following the overthrow of the Assad government on December 8.

Doha was one of the main backers of the armed rebellion that erupted after Assad”s government crushed a peaceful uprising in 2011. Unlike several of its neighbours, Qatar had remained a stern critic of Mr Al Assad and did not renew ties with Syria despite its return to the Arab diplomatic fold last year.
