Sharjah Police seize over Dh50,000 in cash from 107 beggars

Sharjah: As part of its ongoing efforts to combat begging, the General Command of Sharjah Police arrested 107 beggars—87 men and 20 women—during the first half of Ramadan this year. .Authorities also seized more than Dh50,000 in cash found in their possession, highlighting the scale at which the beggars operate..The arrests were made as part of Sharjah Police’s intensified awareness campaign, “Begging is a Crime, and Giving is a Responsibility”. This initiative aims to curb begging, which often exploits public compassion for personal gain, and to encourage responsible charitable giving through official channels..Brigadier General Omar Al Ghazal, Director of the Special Tasks Department at Sharjah Police, praised the critical role of community members in reporting beggars. He urged the public to continue using the designated hotlines 901 and 80040 to report suspicious individuals and help authorities track their locations..“Raising awareness about the deceptive tactics used by beggars is essential in reducing this negative behaviour,” Al Ghazal stated. He emphasised that charitable donations should be made through licensed organisations to ensure they reach those in genuine need.
